Bangladesh started day two on 310-9 after having won the toss and elected to bat first on day one. Their innings lasted all of one ball today (November 29) as Tim Southee trapped Shoriful Islam with the first ball of the day to end Bangladesh’s innings.
New Zealand openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway looked steady before both were undone by spin. Latham fell sweeping Taijul Islam for 21 while Conway was caught at silly point off the bowling of Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 12.
Kane Williamson held the New Zealand innings together as regular wickets fell around him. Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips crossed 40, but did not reach their half-centuries.
Bangladesh struck with their first over with the second new ball. Taijul went through the defences of Williamson, bringing Sodhi at the crease at No.9, with the score reading 262-7. Sodhi lasted six balls as Taijul got his fourth wicket of the day in his very next over.
A full delivery outside off stump skid through with the angle and took Sodhi’s inside edge as he prodded forward to defend. It somehow missed his off stump by a whisker and ricocheted off the wicketkeeper’s pads to lob up towards Shahadat Hossain who was standing at short leg.
The Bangladesh fielders unanimously went up in appeal, but were turned down by the on-field umpire. They didn’t waste any time in going up for the review and the decision was eventually overturned.
Sodhi’s was the eighth wicket to fall for New Zealand, as they ended the day on 266-8, trailing Bangladesh by 44 runs.
