Glamorgan beat Somerset by 15 runs in a shortened One Day Cup final to leave Somerset ending the season trophyless after the possibility of taking home silverware in all three competitions was very alive only two weeks ago.
Glamorgan won the trophy for the second time in four seasons after the final was shortened to 20 overs per side, due to the threat of rain on what was already the reserve day for the fixture. Having been put into bat by Somerset captain Sean Dickson, Glamorgan were in trouble eary when Alfie Ogden took two wickets in two balls in the second over of the game. He dismissed first Kiran Carlson and next Thomas Bevan before Will Smale and Sam Northeast put on a 39-run partnership to stabilise the innings. Northeast finished unbeaten on 63 off 49 balls, with Billy Root adding a significant 39. Timm van der Gugten added 26 off just nine balls to boost Glamorgan to 186-7.
A calamitous run out which saw George Thomas run out in the third over got the chase off to a bad start for Somerset. Van der Gugten and James Mcllroy kept things tight in the opening few overs, and Somerset were 38-1 by the end of the sixth, with the required run rate climbing above 11. While Andy Umeed kept them in the chase with a counter-attack, he was dismissed for a 36-ball 45, with Thomas Rew's wicket in the next over leaving them needing 98 runs to win off 44 balls.
Despite consecutive sixes from Archie Vaughan off Andy Gorvin, and a cameo from Dickson, the early wickets were too much to come back from for Somerset, and they fell short by 16 runs.
In a vindication of the umpire's decision to reduce the match ahead of play, as soon as the players came off the field the rain got heavier.
Glamorgan's was their second win in the last four years and their fifth one-day triumph overall. Somerset last won the competition in 2019, but would have been hopeful a couple of weeks ago that a win this year would form part of an historic treble.
After the 12th round of the County Championship, in which Somerset took a remarkable victory over Surrey, Somerset had the opportunity to overtake Surrey in the Division One table for Championship glory. While they started the last two rounds eight points behind Surrey, given the favourable draw for the final two rounds it wasn't out of the question that Somerset could leapfrog them. They were also headed to T20 Blast Finals Day following their Championship match against Surrey, with One-Day Cup final qualification already secured.
However, Surrey won their following Championship game against Durham and Somerset lost heavily to Lancashire, handing Surrey a third consecutive Championship trophy. Somerset also lost to Gloucestershire in the T20 Blast final, meaning the One Day Cup final was the last possibility of silverware this year for the side.
