Tasmania finished in the bottom half in the 2019/20 Sheffield Shield season. Can they launch a title challenge in Sheffield Shield 2020/21?

The Hobart-based side will be looking to add to their three Sheffield Shield titles. Here’s everything you need to know about their team.

Coach: Jeff Vaughan

Captain: Matthew Wade

Full squad: Tom Andrews, Gabe Bell, Jackson Bird, Alex Doolan, Jake Doran, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Nathan Ellis, Tim Paine, Sam Rainbird, Peter Siddle, Jordan Silk, Matthew Wade, Charlie Wakim, Tim Ward, Beau Webster, Mac Wright

Last year’s finish: Fourth

Tournament history: Despite winning the first-ever first-class match played in Australia, all the way back in 1851, it wasn’t until 1977/78 that Tasmania were finally admitted to participate in the Sheffield Shield competition. They had to wait a while for their maiden title, which eventually came in the 2006/07 season, with two more Sheffield Shield crowns following soon after, in 2010/11 and 2012/13.

Key player: Jackson Bird. The sometimes Australia quick might never have nailed down a Test spot, but his fast-medium seam-ups have found a perfect home on the green-tinged tracks of Hobart. Whether he can have the same success without those Bellerive Oval comforts could play a big part in Tasmania’s chances.

Fixtures:

Oct 10-13: v Queensland
Oct 19-22: v South Australia
Oct 30-Nov 2: v Victoria
Nov 8-11: v Western Australia
