Yuzvendra Chahal takes County Championship five-for

Watch: India spinner Yuzvendra Chahal bowled a perfect leg-break on his way to five wickets for Northants against Derbyshire in the penultimate round of the County Championship today (September 10).

Chahal, who last played a match for India in June 2023, took a while to pick up his first wicket. He bowled 11 wicketless overs and conceded 39 runs before he struck with the first ball of his 12th. Aneurin Donald was lured into playing a pull shot by a ball that kept low, but he was dismissed by a catch from James Sales on the ring.

Now with Wayne Madsen in his sights, Chahal dismissed him just two overs later with the pick of his five wickets for the day. He pitched the ball on leg stump and found considerable turn for it to take out Madsen's off stump with a perfect leg break. On a roll, Chahal got rid of Zak Chappell in the same over, the No.8 miscuing a drive to Luke Procter at mid on.

Derbyshire were now 159-7 and in big trouble, still trailing Northants' first innings score of 219. After conceding just one single from his next two overs, Chahal ended the innings with consecutive deliveries - Martin Andersson having been dismissed by Rob Keogh the over after Chahal got Chappell and Procter.

Alex Thomson attempted to sweep a full delivery from Chahal but got a top edge, with fellow India player Prithvi Shaw taking the catch. The very next ball, Jack Morley tried to defend a ball pitched on off stump but was deceived by the lack of spin with the ball sneaking past his outside edge to take out the off stump.

Derbyshire were all out for 165, with Chahal finishing with figures of 5-45 from 16.3 overs.
