Somerset's appeal for a run out was turned down despite the batter being well out of his ground.

Watch: Somerset were denied a wicket during their County Championship match against Lancashire as their run out appeal was turned down despite batter George Balderson being well out of his ground.

On Wednesday, Lancashire and Somerset faced off on day two of their County Championship Division One fixture. The first day had moved quickly, as Lancashire were bowled out for 140 thanks to four-wicket hauls from Craig Overton and Lewis Gregory.

Somerset then managed a narrow six-run lead, as Tom Bailey and Balderson took four wickets each. Lancashire ended day one at 16-1 in their second innings.

Will Williams fell early on day two, before Harry Singh (31) and Josh Bohannon (60) put on 85 for the third wicket. A middle-overs slide then saw them slip to 168-6 before George Bell and Luke Wells put on 83 for the seventh wicket.

In the 98th over of the innings, Jack Leach ran in to Balderson, who charged the spinner, coming a few paces down the wicket. Balderson missed the full delivery, as did Somerset keeper James Rew.

But the slip fielder was alert to the situation, and grabbed the ball after it went past Rew. The fielders and bowler all went up in appeal for a catch, and in the midst of appealing, the slip fielder threw down the stumps with Balderson seemingly well out of his ground.

Somerset's fielders began running off in celebration of the run out, but were soon dismayed to find that the umpire had give Balderson not out – neither had the decision been out caught, or run out.
