Kaul was signed for a short stint with Northants as a replacement for Australia’s Chris Tremain, who has returned home after playing the first four rounds of the competition. Kaul will play the next three Championship matches for Northants, facing Derbyshire and Yorkshire after their game against Gloucestershire this week.

Bancroft made a promising start in Northampton after Gloucestershire elected to bat first. He reached his half-century off 90 balls in the morning session after Ben Charlesworth was dismissed by George Scrimshaw. However, four balls after reaching the milestone, Bancroft, facing up to Kaul, looked to defend a ball coming in on the angle to him which jagged off the surface.

The ball missed his inside edge and wrapped him on the knee roll of his front pad. Kaul and the rest of the fielders immediately appealed to the umpire, who quickly raised his finger. On a roll, Kaul struck against a few overs later, dismissing Ollie Price who was caught by Emilio Gay.

Kaul has made six white-ball international appearances for India between 2018 and 2019. He has four T20I wickets to his name and was a vital part of India’s 2008 U19 World Cup win.
