Ricardo Vasconcelos, batting on 41 off 65 balls, came down the track against Derbyshire captain David Lloyd, who was bowling off-spin from around the wicket.
The left-handed Vasconcelos tried to park the ball over deep mid-wicket but missed it entirely. Neither could he hold on to the bat, which flew towards square leg, and the ball simultaneously shattered his stumps. He looked in disbelief before walking back to the pavilion with his team at 90-2 after 22.2 overs.
Northamptonshire went to stumps with a lead of 255 runs in their second innings. Earlier in the first innings, a 220-ball 102 from Rob Keogh helped them post 422 before Ben Sanderson (5-76) helped them bowl out Derbyshire for 362.
Emilio Gay will resume day four on 89 off 121 and with Karun Nair on a 36-ball 37. Some quick runs, followed by a declaration, is likely.
