Watch: Neil Wagner, playing for Durham in the 2024 County Championship, picked up his first red-ball wicket for the club, dismissing Ben Slater with a delivery that shattered two of his stumps.
Wagner, who retired from international cricket early this year, signed up for Durham for the final five games of this season’s County Championship. He played his first red-ball match for Durham against Nottinghamshire at Chester-le-Street.
After Durham posted 531-7d, the Notts openers Haseeb Ahmed and Slater walked out to bat. However, they were unable to get a strong start, with Slater falling in the third over with the scorecard reading 11.
Wagner sent down a swinging delivery that breached the batter’s defence. The ball uprooted two of the three stumps as Slater had to walk back for an 11-ball 2. He went on to remove the opposition skipper Haseeb Hameed later, getting him caught down the leg side.
Wagner, 38, played his final Test against South Africa in February this year, finishing as the fifth-highest wicket-taker among New Zealand bowlers.
