Pakistan international Mir Hamza picked up the wicket of Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara on the opening day of Glamorgan’s Division Two County Championship fixture at home to Sussex.
Winless Glamorgan opted to bowl first against table-toppers Sussex and it was a decision that reaped positive results. Several Sussex batters made starts on the first day in Cardiff but none made them count.
Among them was Pujara who fell for 41 a week after he scored the 64th first-class hundred of his career away to Derbyshire. Hamza made the all important breakthrough, drawing an edge from a delivery that went across Pujara to hand wicketkeeper Chris Cooke a straightforward chance behind the stumps.
Hamza has played five Tests for Pakistan having initially debuted in 2018. He made a recent return to the national set-up and impressed on Pakistan’s tour of Australia over the winter, taking seven wickets at an average of 20. Pujara, meanwhile, last played for India in the 2023 World Test Championship final.
Sussex were eventually bowled out for 278 with Hamza finishing with figures of 4-70, the first time the left-armer has taken more than one wicket in an innings this season.
