Watch: At Southport, James Anderson celebrated his return to the County Championship with six wickets in his first nine overs of the summer of 2024.
Ahead of his farewell Test match, against the West Indies at Lord’s, James Anderson turned up for Lancashire for his first match of the 2024 County Championship. Lancashire batted all of the first day to score 344-8, but there was no play on the second day.
When play resumed on the third day, Lancashire declared on 353-9, but not before Anderson walked out at No.11 to face two balls without scoring a run. Captain Keaton Jennings batted through the innings with an unbeaten 183 as Nottinghamshire's Lyndon James returned 4-61.
Anderson then scythed through the Nottinghamshire top order, taking six quick wickets inside ten unchanged overs to leave them reeling at 40-6.
Captain Haseeb Hameed played one on to the stumps. The next five wickets – Will Young (by the wicketkeeper), Joe Clarke (second slip), Jack Haynes (short leg), James (gully), Liam Patterson-White (gully) – were all caught. This was the 55th five-wicket haul of Anderson’s first-class career and 14th six-wicket haul.
Having bowled 10 overs on the trot, Anderson had figures of 6-19.
