Watch: Shaheen Afridi came close to picking a hat-trick in the 2022 County Championship, claiming two wickets in as many deliveries during a clash between Middlesex and Leicestershire at Lord’s.
The Pakistan quick was at his fiery best against Leicestershire, pushing them on the backfoot with two wickets in two balls on Day 1 of the clash. Bowling the fifth over of the innings, Shaheen first got opener, Hassan Azad, off the first ball with an outside-off delivery that was nudged to Peter Handscomb at first slip. The very next delivery saw Shaheen bowl fuller to the No.3 batter and Leicestershire’s skipper Colin Ackermann, who was looking to leave the ball but ended up edging one onto his stumps. Then on a hat-trick, Shaheen sent down an inswinging yorker to Louis Kimber, who pushed it away to deny Shaheen the feat. Later Kimber was clean bowled by the left-armer in the ninth over.
This was the second time in the County Championship that Shaheen was on a hat-trick. Last week, the Middlesex quick had dismissed Glamorgan’s Marnus Labuschagne and Sam Northeast in the space of two deliveries. The 22-year-old had ended the game with figures of 3-35 and 1-34 in the two innings, respectively.
