Tom Helm got a thick edge on a delivery sharp delivery from Tom Lawes, which flew quickly behind to Jacks. Moving to his left to take it at shoulder height, the ball hit Jacks’ hands hard and bounced out. As Jacks fell to the ground off balance, he reached out with his right hand to try.
Unable to grab onto the rebound, he instead managed to get his finger-tips to it, slightly popping the ball up as he hit the floor. Latham reacted quickly to go for the ball as it too fell towards the turf, just managing to get his hand under it inches above the ground.
Ben Foakes and Dom Sibley (first slip) quickly mobbed the two fielders for their extraordinary effort, with Helm left staring in disbelief at how he had been dismissed.
Helm was the penultimate wicket to fall in Middlesex’s first innings. They were bowled out for 238 before being asked to follow on by Surrey, who posted 433 batting first. Jaimie Smith was the outstanding contribution in that innings with 138.
Middlesex’s second innings didn’t get off to a good start either, they lost Pieter Malan off the second ball of the first over.
