Watch: Steve Smith signed off from his time with Sussex by taking a wicket with his off-spin in the dying embers of his side’s clash against Glamorgan.
With the game meandering towards a draw after Glamorgan eventually piled on over 700 in their second innings having conceded a 358-run first innings deficit, Smith was handed the ball.
Instead of bowling his usual leg-spin, which has claimed 64 international wickets, Smith bowled a spell of gentle off-breaks, echoing his Australia teammate Marnus Labuschagne’s move earlier in the English season – Labuschagne, who predominantly bowls leg-spin and has previously claimed first-class wickets with medium pace took wickets with off-spin earlier in the campaign.
Smith’s wicket came via an innocuous, short delivery to Glamorgan No. 10 James Harris. Harris rocked back onto his back foot and pulled Smith hard over the leg-side only for substitute fielder Sean Hunt to take an excellent catch on the boundary rope to hand Smith his first wicket for Sussex.
This was Smith’s third and final game of his Sussex stint. He registered scores of 30, 3 and 89 falling lbw on each occasion.
