Watch: Derbyshire, chasing 380 to win a 2023 County Championship clash against Sussex, narrowly missed out on an epic victory despite a stunning 54-ball 73 by 22-year-old Haider Ali. The match ended in a draw.
Derbyshire, winless and bottom in Division Two of the County Championship this week, looked out of the game at 136-4, with a huge target ahead of them. Skipper Leus du Plooy played a key role, hitting 128 off 117 balls, and a 145-run stand with Haider in only 122 balls brought Derbyshire back into the game.
Haider struck seven fours and four sixes to bring up his eighth first-class fifty. He eventually departed in the 47th over, making 73 in 54, with his innings giving impetus to the run chase.
His dismissal, however, stalled the run flow and the departure of du Plooy soon further increased the pressure on the side. However, Derbyshire were able to hang on for a draw, falling 19 runs short of the target, with Nos.7 and 8, Anuj Dal and Alex Thomson, scoring 26 and 14.
