Batting second, Glamorgan were struggling at New Road, having fallen to 170-9 in response to Worcestershire’s first-innings total of 284. The eighth and ninth wickets fell in consecutive overs to bring Jamie McIlroy at the crease to join Billy Root.
Still over a hundred runs behind, Root and McIlroy had a hard task to close the first innings deficit. Van Beek, however, brought the innings to a close in emphatic style.
Having already taken three wickets in the innings (Colin Ingram, Chris Cooke and Ben Kellaway), he produced a perfect delivery from the final ball of his 12th over to McIlroy.
From over the wicket, he made the ball hoop through the air with prodigious outswing, and pitched on McIlroy’s toes directly in front of middle stump.
There was little the No.11 McIlroy could do with the ball, and it clattered into his middle and off stumps. That wicket gave van Beek his best ever County Championship figures of 4-42, and Glamorgan conceded a first-innings deficit of 114.
It wasn’t all Worcestershire’s way however. Gareth Roderick was trapped lbw by the first ball of their second innings – off McIlroy. At the time of writing, Worcestershire were 74-1 in the second innings. They lead by 188.
