Sudharsan made his County Championship debut in Surrey’s Division One clash against Northamptonshire. Choosing to field first after winning the toss, Surrey conceded 357 in the first innings, out of which 150 came off the bat of Karun Nair, who registered his maiden County Championship century.
Tom Lawes took a five-for for Surrey, finishing with figures of 5-105 in the first innings. In response, Surrey started poorly. Openers Rory Burns and Dom Sibley were the only ones among the top four to get into double digits.
Sudharsan came out to bat at No.4 in the 22nd over with the score reading 43-2. His stay at the crease, however, was a rather short one as he was controversially given out caught behind off the bowling of Luke Procter six balls into his innings.
Procter delivered a short ball into the pitch from around the wicket to the left-hander which Sudharsan tried to duck under. The ball didn’t bounce as per his expectations and hit his elbow on the way through to the wicketkeeper who took a low catch.
The Northants players went up in appeal immediately and so did the umpire’s finger, leaving Sudharsan in shock as he stood his ground for a moment before reluctantly walking off for a score of three on county debut.
Surrey then lost two more wickets in the next eight overs and had half their side back in the hut at the score of 66.
