County Championship 2023 Division One
Karun Nair (Northamptonshire)
Drafted in as Sam Whiteman’s replacement, Nair impressed on his Northants debut, making 78 and adding 147 with Emilio Gay for the second wicket. Ben Sanderson’s hat-trick reduced Warwickshire to 24-5 in the fourth innings after both teams declared on the last day, but the hosts eventually won by two wickets. Barring a miracle, Northants are set to be relegated to Division Two.
Jayant Yadav (Middlesex)
In his first County Championship match of the summer, Jayant made five when Middlesex got 194 against Lancashire at Old Trafford, but he rose to the occasion with the ball to finish with 5-131. He denied Luke Wells (97) and George Bell (91) their hundreds, but his most spectacular dismissal was that of Josh Bohannon.
Yuzvendra Chahal (Kent)
Chahal sent down 56 overs across the innings on Championship debut, claiming 3-63 and 2-43 to help Kent enforce make Nottinghamshire follow on at Canterbury. Of particular note was the ripper that sent Lyndon James’ stump cartwheeling to give him his maiden County wicket.
Umesh Yadav (Essex), B Sai Sudharsan (Surrey)
Neither county played in this round.
County Championship 2023 Division Two
Cheteshwar Pujara (Sussex)
Sussex captain Pujara got two starts but failed to convert either. He made 26 and 23 against Leicestershire at Hove, though he hit his fifth six of the season in the second innings. With a 200-run cut-off, he still has the best average for Sussex this season (54.08).
Jaydev Unadkat (Sussex)
Unadkat, Pujara’s teammate at Saurashtra, India, and now Sussex, had a quiet outing against Durham before coming to his own here. In the first innings, he claimed 3-23 to bowl out Leicestershire for 108; in the second, he returned 6-94 as Sussex won a thriller by 15 runs. For them, only Ollie Robinson has better innings or match figures this season.
While Pujara plays under Unadkat in the Ranji Trophy, the roles are switched in the County Championship.
