Niroshan Dickwella reviews not out decision

Watch: In a bizarre sequence of events in the LPL 2024 Qualifier 1 on July 18, Niroshan Dickwella reviewed after being given not out, and was ruled out in the process.

Jaffna Kings posted 177-7 after Galle Marvels captain Niroshan Dickwella won the toss and opted to field in the Lanka Premier League 2024 Qualifier 1 at R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Avishka Fernando top-scored with 52 in 33 balls, and found support from Kusal Mendis (46 in 39) and Rilee Rossouw (40 in 22) even as Dwaine Pretorius claimed 4-23.

Galle went off to a rollicking start in response, racing to 29-0 after 2.1 overs. Alex Hales had already made 20 off the first 10 balls he faced, while Dickwella’s three balls had fetched him nine.

Having tried a scoop off the previous ball, Dickwella now attempted an encore, off Azmatullah Omarzai, but the ball went to wicketkeeper Mendis. Both Omarzai and Mendis appealed for caught behind, but the umpire ruled Dickwella not out. Then, for reasons known only to him, Dickwella reviewed.

To add to the confusion, Mendis threw the wicket down at the non-striker’s end with Hales outside the crease and the ball sped to the boundary. The course of events might have led to some debate over whether Hales should have been run out or Galle should have got four runs, but it did not come to that.

Replays indicated that the ball had brushed Dickwella’s bat and glove, and he was ruled caught behind.

The wicket did not dent Galle’s progress. Hales smashed a 21-ball 36 before Tim Seifert (62 not out in 41 balls) and Janith Liyanage (56 in 36) saw them home with seven wickets and 11 balls in hand.
