Watch: In a Big Bash League match in Perth, David Moody had to be taken out of the attack one delivery into his spell after he bowled two full-tosses above waist height.
Stephen Eskinazi took 10 runs off the first over of the match, off Tom Rogers, after Melbourne Renegades put Perth Scorchers in at the Optus Stadium in Perth. For the second over, Aaron Finch entrusted Moody, a fast-medium bowler playing his ninth Twenty20 match.
Cameron Bancroft played Moody’s first ball to mid-wicket. The next ball, at 143.8 kph, was a high full-toss that Bancroft tried to pull. The ball brushed Bancroft’s gloves and thudded into his ribcage, and Bancroft agonisingly responded to Eskinazi’s call for a run.
The umpires rightly called it a no-ball. The free-hit ball was a wide, and Moody had to bowl again.
This time Moody bowled another full-toss, outside off-stump. Eskinazi, ready for the scoop, managed to play the shot over the slip for four. Donovan Koch and Paul Wilson, the umpires, conferred, ruled another no-ball, and invoked Law 41.7 (“Bowling of dangerous and unfair non-pitching deliveries”).
As per 41.7.4 – “Should there be any further dangerous such delivery [sic] by the same bowler in that innings, the umpire shall call and signal No ball; when the ball is dead, direct the captain of the fielding side to suspend the bowler immediately from bowling; inform the other umpire for the reason for this action. The bowler thus suspended shall not be allowed to bowl again in that innings” – they barred Moody from bowling again in the innings.
Jack Prestwidge completed the over, and finished with 3.5-0-42-0 as Eskinazi (54 in 29 balls) and Bancroft (95 not out in 50) took the Scorchers to 212-5. Despite Shaun Marsh’s 34-ball 54, Finch’s 35-ball unbeaten 76, and end-of-innings cameos from Will Sutherland and Prestwidge, the Renegades could not go beyond 202-5. Moody did not bat.
