Watch: A young BBL spectator’s attempt at a crowd catch ended up going sideways, when he dived out of the enclosure onto the field, hilariously missing the ball and ending up on his belly.

The incident occurred during the Perth Scorchers-Sydney Sixers BBL 2021/22 Qualifier in Melbourne, during Sixers’ failed chase of Scorchers’ total of 189. Facing his first ball, Dan Christian swatted the last delivery of the seventh over from Ashton Agar to cow corner, the ball sailing over the fence. However, one of the spectators decided to put his catching skills to use, attempting to add himself to BBL’s glorious list of crowd catches.

It all fizzled out pretty quickly: the fan jumped out of the crowd enclosure in a desperate attempt to reach the ball, missing it completely as it bounced off before he could properly land. He ended up diving flat on the grass, a couple of KFC buckets flying alongside him. He took a moment to rue the opportunity he’d missed.

“What a strike and oh, he desperately wanted to get in the Maccas classic catches,” commentator Adam Gilchrist said on Fox. “The desperation. He got over the fence. It wasn’t even the fall over leaning. Oh, what a feeling indeed.”

“He always knew it was going to be short,” he added.

According to Fox, the on-ground security came along to speak to the spectator, who took him behind the stand for a quick chat. He later emerged, much to the applause of the crowd.

“I don’t know I think he is getting chucked out,” Gilchrist said, as the security took him away. “That’s unlucky. That’s harsh. I don’t think he has had any beers or anything. He is just having a good time.”

“The world has gone mad I’m afraid,” he added.
