Watch: Shane Warne was not only one of the greatest bowlers in the game but also an astute tactician who put his knowledge of leg-spin to good use to befuddle the best batters in his career.
Warne, who passed away on Friday, famously explained how he’d look to dismiss his Big Bash League opponent Brendon McCullum a delivery before running in to bowl to the right-handed batter in a 2011 match between Melbourne Stars and Brisbane Heat.
Warne, who was wired up and speaking to the TV commentators while out on the field, rightly predicted what McCullum would attempt to do off his bowling, and how he would look to counter him.
“He might try to shape to sweep after that first one or maybe go inside out again a bit harder, so I’m gonna try to slide one in there, fast,” Warne said. On cue, McCullum looked to sweep but Warne slipped the ball in quicker to bowl the New Zealand batter.
Warne’s demise has left the cricketing world shocked, with tributes pouring in for the spin wizard.
