Watch: England all-rounder Lewis Gregory had a moment to forget in Brisbane Heat’s Big Bash League loss to Hobart Hurricanes, missing the cut strip with the penultimate delivery of his spell.
After 2.4 overs, his spell was going decently, with just 25 runs having come off them until that point. But in his last three balls he conceded more than half that many again, a mini-burst that would prove vital in the final analysis. He was pumped for two sixes by Tim David, but most embarrassing was a delivery David didn’t get anywhere near.
With what should have been the final ball of his spell, Gregory attempted an off-cutter, but lost his footing and his radar as he released the ball, with the delivery flying wide on the off-side, landing off the cut strip and requiring some acrobatic work by wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson to keep the penalty down to just one run.
However, with the ball as wide as it was, the umpire had no choice, after checking Gregory received no ill-effects from his tumble, but to call a no-ball and a free hit. The extra delivery went for a maximum. Brisbane Heat eventually lost the game by one run in a dramatic finish.
