Watch: Australia cricketer Ben McDermott hit what is being termed as arguably the biggest six in BBL history, one of five biggies he hit during his 96-run blitz for Hobart Hurricanes in the 2020/21 Big Bash League.
Dermott, who played the last of his 12 T20Is in 2019, grabbed eyeballs with a whirlwind knock at No.3, scoring 96 off just 56 balls in Hurricanes’ chase of 178 against Sydney Thunder.
One of his five sixes was a brutally clean strike, a leg-side swipe off Nathan McAndrew over cow corner, which got enough power and elevation to fly out of the stadium.
“That’s the biggest hit ever, maybe, in BBL history,” Mark Waugh, the on-air commentator, was heard saying. “It looked like he was on the golf driving range, the way he was hitting the ball. I’ve never seen such power hitting. It was just brute force.
“It was just lovely contact with the ball. Whenever it was in his arc, he just put it way over the fence.”
“You don’t hit the ball any cleaner or any harder than that. That was some sort of innings.”
Given the trajectory of the stroke which took it out of the Manuka Oval, the six distance tracker, which usually records the distance of a six in metres, couldn’t come up with a reading. The commentators, however, estimated the six to have travelled 120-130 metres.
Currently the second-highest run-getter in the ongoing BBL season, McDermott hit a few more sixes over the leg-side fence on Monday night, later admitting that he was in a nice rhythm when he unleashed the magnificent strike. “I got it pretty nicely,” McDermott told Fox Cricket.
“We started pretty slow, so it was almost like a bit of swing in hope – and it just came right out of the middle. It just got me going, so I was glad I hit it out of the middle of the bat.”
