A look at the chances of the Adelaide Strikers team ahead of the 2020/21 Big Bash League [ BBL ], which begins on December 10.
The South Australia team Adelaide Strikers were founded in 2011, replacing the Southern Redbacks when the Twenty20 Big Bash competition became the existing Big Bash League. The team won the 2017/18 BBL, captained by Colin Ingram and coached by Jason Gillespie. For the 2020/21 edition, the team will be led by Travis Head, while Gillespie continues in his role as head coach.
Adelaide Strikers BBL team preview
The Adelaide Strikers BBL team seem to be a great mix of experience and youth: the side will be headlined by Travis Head, Peter Siddle and Michel Neser, some of the most established names in Australian domestic cricket, while exciting youngsters such as Liam Scott and Spencer Johnson have also earned contracts this year.
However, it will be the overseas brigade of Danny Briggs, Phil Salt and Rashid Khan that gives them the added edge, and it remains to be seen if they can better their third-place performance from last year.
Adelaide Strikers squad list
Travis Head, Wes Agar, Alex Carey, Harry Conway, Spencer Johnson, Liam Scott, Matt Short, Peter Siddle, Cameron Valente, Jake Weatherald, Daniel Worrall, Jon Wells, Michael Neser, Harry Nielsen, Liam O’Connor, Matt Renshaw, Danny Briggs, Rashid Khan, Phil Salt
Key domestic player: Alex Carey
Over the last two years, Carey has emerged as Australia’s first-choice wicketkeeping candidate, showcasing sound skills behind the stumps, and the ability to produce clutch knocks with the bat. In BBL 2019/20, Carey was the second-highest run-scorer for the Adelaide Strikers team, scoring 391 runs at 35.54.
Key international player: Rashid Khan
Easily the biggest T20 name on the Strikers’ roster, Rashid Khan will be playing his fourth BBL season, having already picked up 56 wickets in 40 games. His availability will be a cause of worry though since Afghanistan are slated to play Ireland in January, which could cut into Rashid’s BBL campaign.
