Watch: South Africa white-ball batting coach JP Duminy rewound the clock by fielding as a substitute during the third ODI against Ireland in Abu Dhabi yesterday (October 7).
The sweltering weather in Abu Dhabi resulted in an unexpected cameo as the South Africa white-ball batting coach, Duminy, came out to field for his team. Several South Africa fielders were out due to fatigue and soreness from the heat, with Duminy, who called time on his international career back in 2019, filling in their absence.
Duminy, 40, was instantly in the thick of action, diving, and rolling onto the field to stop the ball. In a way, the effort evoked a sense of nostalgia for cricket fans.
In the match, Ireland racked up 284-9, courtesy of Paul Stirling's 88. The tourists were bundled out for 215 in response, succumbing to a 69-run defeat. South Africa won the three-match series 2-1.
