The Test match will mark the debut of Josh Tongue, whose inclusion in the squad had caused a stir. Jonny Bairstow will also return to international cricket after last year’s injury, while eyes will also be on Zak Crawley, whom England have retained amidst criticism.
It will be Ireland’s fourth Test in less than two months after their tours to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka – a significant improvement on the three Test matches they had played between their first Test match, in 2018, and 2023.
England had hosted Ireland once before for a Test match, in 2019. Middlesex’s own Tim Murtagh had taken 5-13 to bowl England out for 85 in 23.4 overs. Ireland took a 122-run lead, but collapsed to 38 in 15.4 overs against Stuart Broad (4-19) and Chris Woakes (6-17) to lose by 143 runs.

For most of 2021 and some of 2022, England went through a phase where they won one out of 18 Test matches. Then, with the appointment of Brendon McCullum as coach and Ben Stokes as captain, they stormed their way to 10 wins in 12 Tests.
The Test match against Ireland will help England sort out their squad and strategies ahead of the much-anticipated Ashes. England have not held the urn since 2015: they lost 0-4 in Australia in 2017/18 and 2021/22 and, in between, drew 2-2 at home in 2019.
