Promising 17-year-old Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre has made his IPL debut for Chennai Super Kings on Sunday (April 20) against his hometown franchise, Mumbai Indians, at Wankhede Stadium.
Initially overlooked in the mega auction, Mhatre earned a mid-season CSK call-up after captain Ruturaj Gaikwad’s injury. His standout performance during trials at Chepauk sealed the deal.
The 17-year-old had already showcased his talent domestically, amassing 458 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and 471 runs (including three centuries) in the Ranji Trophy. On his IPL debut, he announced himself with a fiery 15-ball 32, studded with four fours and two sixes.

Youngest player to play for each IPL team
Suryavanshi became the youngest IPL debutant at 14 years and 23 days. A day later, Mhatre set another age-related record – Chennai Super Kings' youngest-ever player – breaking Abhinav Mukund’s 2008 mark (18 years, 139 days) from the inaugural season. Mhatre's IPL debut came at 17 years and 278 days.
In recent years, South Africa’s left-arm pace sensation Kwena Maphaka became Mumbai Indians' youngest debutant (17 years, 354 days) in 2024, while Lucknow Super Giants’ Arshin Kulkarni (19 years, 75 days) set their franchise record the same year.
