Mumbai Indians handed an IPL debut to 24-year-old Vignesh Puthur, a left-arm wrist spinner, during their first match of IPL 2025 against CSK in Chennai today (March 23).
MI were put into bat by CSK after losing the toss. With Jasprit Bumrah missing as he is yet to recover from his back injury, they started with two debutants in their first XI - right-arm seamer Satyanarayana Raju and wicketkeeper Robin Minz.
CSK spinners, led by Noor Ahmad (4-18), kept a leash on MI's scoring before Deepak Chahar, playing in MI's blues for the first time, added 28 off 15 to provide some respectability to their total as they finished on 155-9.
As the innings changed over and MI stepped on to the field, they sprang up a surprise as Rohit Sharma was subbed out and 24-year-old Puthur was called in as the impact player.

IPL 2025: Who is Vignesh Puthur?
Puthur hails from Kerala but is yet to play senior-level domestic cricket, in any format, which makes his IPL debut all the more remarkable.
He is a left-arm wrist spinner, who came into limelight during the 2024 season playing in the Kerala Cricket League. The season wasn't very fruitful for him, where three matches fetched just two wickets, but by then he had done enough to catch the attention of MI's scouts.
He was bought in the IPL 2025 auction at his base price of INR 30 lakhs – and went on to strike in his very first over for MI, dismissing CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad for 53.
