Shaik Rasheed has been handed his IPL debut during the Chennai Super Kings' IPL 2025 match against Lucknow Super Giants on Monday (April 14).
Reeling at the bottom of the table, CSK made two changes for their seventh game of the season. Out-of-form spinner R Ashwin made way for England all-rounder Jamie Overton, while struggling opener Devon Conway was replaced by 20-year-old Rasheed.
Rasheed, originally picked by CSK ahead of the 2023 IPL season, was roped in for the 2025 edition at his base price of 30 lakh INR.

Who is Shaik Rasheed?
Hailing from Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, Rasheed comes from a humble background, with his father playing a pivotal role in shaping his career. To ensure his son received quality coaching, the duo would often travel long distances – a sacrifice that came at a cost, as his father lost his job twice to support Rasheed’s cricketing dreams.
The hard work paid off when Rasheed’s breakthrough came at the 2022 U-19 World Cup, where he was named India’s vice-captain. He announced himself on the big stage with a match-winning 94 against Australia in the semi-final, playing a decisive role in India's title-winning campaign.
In the 2023–24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, India’s domestic T20 competition, Rasheed had a stellar season, ending as Andhra Pradesh’s highest run-getter with 240 runs at an average of 48 and a strike rate of 145.45. The innings that established his credentials was an unbeaten 100 off 54 balls against Arunachal Pradesh. Coming in at 25 for 2, he took his team to 228 for 4, which they eventually won by 145 runs.
At 19 years and 25 days, Rasheed became the second-youngest Indian ever to score a T20 century in that match, breaking the record of Hyderabad’s Akshath Reddy, who had achieved the feat at 19 years and 30 days back in 2010. Vijay Zol, captain of India’s 2014 Under-19 campaign, holds the record for his 109 for Maharashtra against Mumbai in SMAT 2013 at 18 years and 118 days.
Rasheed led Coastal Riders to the play-offs in the Andhra Premier League 2024, scoring 297 runs in six innings at 59.40 and 140.75, the third-highest in the competition.
However, it is in the longest format where Rasheed has truly excelled so far in his 19-match first-class career. During the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy, he showcased his ability to play marathon innings with a magnificent 203 against Hyderabad, facing 372 deliveries. His average of 37.62 in the format is backed by two centuries and seven fifties, highlighting his consistency.
