Twenty-one year-old South African starlet Dewald Brevis has signed as a replacement player for Chennai Super Kings after going unsold in the IPL auction.

CSK sign South African batter Dewald Brevis

On Friday (April 18), the IPL announced that CSK had signed the batter as a replacement for injured fast bowler Gurjapneet Singh.

"Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have signed South Africa's Dewald Brevis as a replacement for the injured Gurjapneet Singh for the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.

"Dewald Brevis has played 81 T20s and scored 1787 runs with a highest score of 162. He made his T20I Debut for South Africa in 2023 and has played 2 T20Is so far.

"Brevis was previously part of Mumbai Indians (MI), where he played 10 matches. He will join CSK for INR 2.2 Crore."

The nature of Gurjapneet's injury is not yet known. Brevis had registered himself for the IPL 2025 player auction at a base price of INR 75 lakhs, but did not receive any bids. The 21-year-old played seven matches for Mumbai Indians in 2022, and three more for the same franchise last season.

CSK were able to sign Brevis as an overseas player in place of a domestic player, as they have one free slot out of their squad quota of eight foreigners remaining.

How has Dewald Brevis' recent form been?

After breaking out at the U19 World Cup in 2022, Brevis went on to impress in white-ball cricket, slamming an incredible 162 off 57 balls in the CSA T20 Challenge later that year.

In this year's SA20, Brevis was the standout batter for MI Cape Town, scoring 291 runs in 10 innings and striking at 184.2. His 25 sixes were the most in the league, as teammates Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton were the only others to hit over 20.

He has enjoyed a stellar 2024-25 domestic season across formats, averaging 47.75 in red-ball cricket and 66.33 in List A cricket in additions to his SA20 exploits. He will also be in action in the T20 Blast this English summer for Hampshire. That competition begins four days after the IPL final.

Brevis is the second replacement player CSK have secured this season. Earlier this week, they signed 17-year-old Mumbai opening batter Ayush Mhatre in place of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was ruled out of the season after fracturing his elbow. MS Dhoni has taken over as captain.

At the time of writing, CSK sit bottom of the IPL table with just two wins in seven games. Their next match is on Sunday, April 20, against Brevis' previous IPL franchise, Mumbai Indians, at the Wankhede Stadium.
