As debates and discussions mount on about the extent of home advantage teams have in the IPL, here are IPL's all-time home and away rankings.
Nearly two weeks into IPL 2025, at least four different teams have raised concerns over the kind of pitches that have been dished out at their home venues. Although IPL rules prevent franchises from influencing pitch preparation, teams usually build squads based on home conditions. When teams' expectations aren't met, clashes arise.
After 14 matches in IPL 2025, home and away teams have each won seven games. Overall, in the entire history of the IPL, that record is slightly skewed towards the home sides who have won 494 out of 943 games at a win/loss ratio of 1.138. However, this includes seasons played abroad and caravan-style tournaments during COVID-19 lockdowns.
To give us a fair understanding of the extent of home advantage teams have enjoyed, we've only considered matches played at exclusive home venues that weren't shared by other teams in a particular season. Thus, the first half of 2021 and the entire 2022 season, both played in a caravan format, have not been considered in the home table calculation. Play-off matches have been excluded as well so that data isn't diluted with those games where one of the two neutral teams would have been designated as the home side.

All-time home points table: Which team has the best home record in IPL history?
Chennai Super Kings have been head and shoulders ahead of every other team when it comes to maximising home advantage. The gulf between their win/loss ratio of 2.391 and that of the second-placed Rajasthan Royals (1.724) is great than the difference between the second and sixth-placed sides.
Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians are the other two teams to have win/loss ratios greater than 1.5 at home. Three teams - Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Lucknow Super Giants, and Rising Pune Supergiants - have won the same number of home games that they have lost, while the worst performing teams at home have been Gujarat Lions, Deccan Chargers, and Pune Warriors, all interestingly defunct. Among active teams, Punjab Kings have the worst home record (win/loss ratio of 0.872).

All-time away points table: Which team has the best away record in IPL history?
This table considers all matches played outside a team's home venue, except play-offs.
While the sample size for both teams is small, the two newcomers - GT and LSG - have the best record outside home with win/loss ratios of 2 and 1.555 respectively.
Among teams that have played more than 25 IPL games outside home, MI and CSK unsurprisingly have the best (and almost identical) records with win/loss ratios of 0.985 and 0.984 respectively.

Pune Warriors find themselves at the bottom of this list as well, having lost 16 of the 23 away games they played. Among active teams, SRH have the worst record away from home - winning only 43 out of 99 matches so far.

CSK & MI: all-round maestros, SRH & RR: home-track bullies
CSK's strategy of building spin-heavy attacks for Chennai's turning wicket has made them untouchable at home. But to win five titles, a team needs to win consistently away from home as well, and CSK have done that. They rank sixth on the away points table, but the top four teams have played less than 25 matches and will, in all probability, see a downward trend in their win/loss ratios. The fifth team, MI, edges ahead by the barest of margins.

SRH have followed a different pattern. While they have been the third-best team at home, their away performance has let them down. SRH's away win/loss ratio is less than half of that at home. RR have been the same. It could be down to over-optimising squads and playing styles to home conditions so much so that they have barely been able to compete outside. It reflects in their number of titles - one each.
The least successful teams in IPL history - RCB, PBKS, and DC - all of whom are yet to win a trophy, have neither been great at home, nor good away (none of them has won more than they have lost either home or away).
