Rishabh Pant failed to get off the mark in his maiden innings for his new team Lucknow Super Giants in the today's IPL 2025 match.

The left-hander broke all records when he became the most expensive player to be bought in the IPL auction. Pant was released by Delhi Capitals, a team he represented since 2016, after the 2024 edition, and was bought by LSG for a whopping 27 crores.

He was subsequently also named the captain for Lucknow, replacing KL Rahul at the helm. Rahul, who was also released by his former team, was bought by Delhi in the auction.

An underwhelming start for Pant at LSG

Lucknow, who batted first at Visakhapatnam against Delhi, got off to a flier, making 133-1 in 11.3 overs before Mitchell Marsh departed for a 36-ball 72. The opener struck six sixes and as many fours, stitching together a crucial stand with Nicholas Pooran (75 in 30).

Marsh was dismissed by Mukesh Kumar, which brought Pant to the crease. However, he was unable to get going against his former side, failing to get off the mark in the six balls that he faced.

      Pant's six-ball struggle:

11.5: Length ball by Mukesh Kumar, knocked to the off-side
11.6: Length ball, sent down mid-wicket
13.1: Bowled on the outside off by Kuldeep Yadav, left
      13.2: Tossed up, slog missed
13.3: On the leg stump, hit to short fine
13.4: Tossed up outside off, straight to long-off

Pant now averages 7.66 in T20 cricket against Kuldeep Yadav, falling to him thrice in 25 balls that he has faced. He does not have the best record against left-arm spinners overall, averaging just 17.32 against them in 65 innings.

Pant's performance in the current IPL season is crucial for securing his spot in the 2026 T20 World Cup squad, as he is likely to be competing with Sanju Samson for the position. Samson scored 66 in 37 balls in Rajasthan’s clash with Hyderabad on Sunday.

Pant’s inning pushed LSG back in the innings, as they managed just 27 runs in the next 4.2 overs. They eventually finished on 209-8.
