Punjab Kings' Priyansh Arya plays a shot during the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket match between Punjab Kings and Chennai Super Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium on the outskirts of Chandigarh on April 8, 2025

Punjab Kings' youngster Priyansh Arya scripted history in Tuesday's IPL 2025 clash against Chennai Super Kings, blitzing the fastest century by an uncapped batter – a 39-ball stunner that electrified the contest.

Arya was batting on 85 off 35 balls before unleashing mayhem, smashing Matheesha Pathirana for three gigantic sixes and a four off to complete his hundred off 39 balls, the joint-fourth fastest in the IPL. In the process, he became the eighth uncapped batter and the seventh Indian uncapped player to score a century in the tournament.

Shaun Marsh remains the only overseas uncapped player to score an IPL century, achieved during his breakthrough 2008 edition with Kings XI Punjab, where he amassed a season-high 616 runs.

Fewest innings to score first IPL hundred

Brendon McCullum set the benchmark in the IPL’s very first match back in 2008, hammering an unbeaten 158 off 73 balls, a T20 record that stood unchallenged for years. To date, only Michael Hussey has matched the feat of scoring a century on IPL debut, achieving it for Chennai Super Kings in that same inaugural season.

Andrew Symonds and Jonny Bairstow jointly hold the record for being the second-fastest to a maiden IPL century, both reaching the milestone in just their third innings.

Arya's hundred, coming in his fourth innings, makes him the joint-third quickest and joint-quickest among Indians. Manish Pandey, who became the first Indian batter to hit a hundred in the tournament in 2010, also took four innings alongside Paul Valthaty, who played for Kings XI Punjab in 2011. Apart from Pandey, Valthaty and Arya, Adam Gilchrist and Harry Brook also took four innings.

Overall, 14 batters have reached their maiden IPL hundred in less than 10 innings.
