Sunrisers Hyderabad's Ishan Kishan was dismissed in bizarre fashion against Mumbai Indians in today's IPL 2025 match, walking off the field after being given out despite the bowling team seemingly not appealing.

Off the first ball of the third over, a delivery from Deepak Chahar went down the leg side to wicketkeeper Ryan Rickelton. Umpire Vinod Seshan appeared to be signalling a wide, before almost reluctantly changing his decision to out.

There did not seem to be an appeal from any Mumbai Indians fielder, although the bowler managed a half-hearted one as he saw Seshan start to make the signal for wide.

Kishan walked off the field in any case, not even bothering to review the call of out. Replays later showed that he had not edged the ball and instead, it had brushed his thigh on the way to the keeper. His dismissal left SRH at 9-2 in 3.1 overs, after they had been put in to bat.

What do the Laws say about Ishan Kishan's wicket?

There is nothing in the Laws preventing a batter from walking if they think they are out. However, according to law 31.1, "Neither umpire shall give a batter out, even though he may be out under these Playing Conditions, unless appealed to by a fielder. This shall not debar a batter who is out under these Playing Conditions from leaving the wicket without an appeal having been made."

There was no appeal from the fielding team visible on the available broadcast footage, with a few Mumbai Indians players themselves looking confused at the decision as they gathered to celebrate. Skipper Hardik Pandya did appear to be indiciating to his teammates that he (or someone else) had been appealing, though.

If there was an appeal made to the umpire that caused him to raise his finger, then the only error would be Kishan's, to not review the call. However, if there was no appeal, it is puzzling why the umpire gave Kishan out. The batter walking off does not compel umpires to raise the finger.
