Glenn Maxwell set a new record today (March 25) for the most ducks in the history of the IPL when he was out first ball in Punjab Kings' first game of the 2025 IPL.
Having last represented the side in 2020, Maxwell's playing return to Punjab didn't go to plan when he was given out after attempting a reverse sweep off his first ball at the crease. PBKS had been motoring along after opener Priyansh Arya got them off to a fast-start with a 23-ball 47. However, after he was out in the seventh over, Azmatullah Omarzai fell for 16 in the 11th, bringing Maxwell to the crease.
When the umpire's finger went up to give Maxwell out for a golden duck, he opted not to review, and walked off the pitch straight away. If he had chosen to send the decision upstairs, the decision would have been reversed as the ball had in fact been set to miss the stumps.
Glenn Maxwell sets unwanted IPL record
That dismissal also gave Maxwell the unwanted title as the player who has been dismissed for the most ducks in the history of the IPL. He was previously tied on 18 ducks with Dinesh Karthik and Rohit Sharma, whereas he now holds the record alone with 19 ducks. His two most recent ducks came in his two most recent innings in the competition, after he ended last year's season for RCB with a first-ball duck. Five of his 19 ducks have come in his last 10 IPL innings.
Despite losing two wickets in two balls, PBKS went on to post a huge total. Shreyas Iyer finished unbeaten on 97 off 42 balls, stranded at the non-striker's end while Shashank Singh played a lower order cameo at the striker's. He hit 44 off 16 balls to take PBKS to 243-5 at the end of the innings.
