Mumbai Indians set a new team record during Monday's (March 31) IPL 2025 match against KKR.
Bowling first in their third match of the season, Mumbai Indians picked a left-arm seam-bowling debutant, Ashwani Kumar, in their XI. The 23-year-old quick from Punjab got off to the best possible start, getting the wicket of opposition captain Ajinkya Rahane with his first ball.
Led by Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, and Hardik Pandya, MI tightened the screws around KKR, reducing them to 45-5 in seven overs. The visitors were forced to bring on Manish Pandey as their impact player at No.7.
Four left-arm bowlers: A first for MI
Mumbai already had New Zealand international Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner in their XI, along with left-arm wrist-spinner Vignesh Puthur, who also made his debut in MI's first match of the season. Adding Ashwani to the mix, the count of their left-arm bowlers rose to four, a first in the history of Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai had bowled three left-arm bowlers in an IPL match 21 times before today, including in their first match of IPL 2025.
Overall, four left-arm bowlers have bowled in an IPL innings 41 times, including MI's bowling innings today. The first team to do so was Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), who had Dirk Nannes, Ashish Nehra, Pradeep Sangwan, and Daniel Vettori in their attack against CSK in an IPL 2009 match.
Kings XI Punjab, Pune Warriors, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings are the other teams to field four left-arm bowlers in an IPL match. No team has fielded five so far.
