          Team news and updates

KKR have blown hot and cold. One area where they have done well this time is taking wickets immediately after the powerplay to slow the opposition down. They got wickets in the powerplay against the Sunrisers Hyderabad as well, and are slowly looking to return to form after the two defeats.

The last time LSG played at the Eden Gardens, they had donned the maroon and green of local football club Mohun Bagan, co-owned by the same franchise. There is no news of them attempting an encore. As for the cricket, they have had a reasonable season, and would have been in a better position but for the shock defeat against Delhi Capitals. Their Indian pacers are gradually recovering, and the attack is slowly shaping the way they had wanted to. Expect Marsh and Pooran to do the heavy lifting, but the team will expect more of Pant as well.

The defeat against the Rajasthan Royals should not have hurt PBKS: it is not everyday that two of their big hitters will be cleaned up by first-over thunderbolts. Their batting has looked solid and explosive, and their bowling incisive. They will want Chahal to come good, though.

CSK have struggled. They have failed to get going in the powerplay, and have been unable to hit spin in the latter stages of their innings. They will stick to three spinners, but will they back pace more, now that they are on the road?

Eden Gardens and Mullanpur pitch and weather report

Since the start of the 2023 season, the IPL run rate at Eden Gardens has been 9.88 (an average score of 198), the highest of all venues with a five-match cut-off. Pacers go for 10.63 an over here (most), but the spin economy of 8.41 here is the third-best with a 10-match cut-off (after Lucknow and Chepauk). Expect all three of Narine, Moeen, and Varun to play significant roles here, while LSG may bring in local boy Shahbaz Ahmed to support Bishnoi and Rathi.

The Kolkata temperature will rise to 35°C today, will be about 33°C around the toss, and will drop to about 29°C by closing time. There is no chance of rain, but expect a cool evening breeze that is typical of the venue.

Mullanpur has hosted only six IPL matches. Across these, runs have been scored at 8.56 (fourth-slowest since start of 2023). Pacers have gone at 8.91 (third-best) and spinners at 7.36 (best). The challenge for both sides would be to find the most balanced bowling attack.

As a result of the North Indian April heatwave, the temperature in Mullanpur will soar to 40°C in the afternoon. However, it will drop to 35°C around the toss, and will drop to about 27°C by closing time. There is no chance of rain.
