With the announcement of the new retention rules in the Indian Premier League (IPL), here are the players Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) should look to retain ahead of the 2025 auction.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will look to preserve their star-studded core lineup after a successful 2024 campaign. After finishing as the runners-up in the previous season, here are the players SRH will look to retain ahead of the 2025 auction.

The new guidelines allow a franchise to retain six players, capped or uncapped, or using the right-to-match (RTM) option. Hence, SRH will also have to let go of some of the key players from the last season.

The Pat Cummins-led side registered eight wins and five losses in the league stage, finishing second on the table, behind the eventual champions Kolkata Knight Riders. Here are the players SRH could retain for the upcoming season:

SRH to retain overseas stars

SRH relied on their overseas stars such as Cummins, Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen to do the heavy-lifting in the IPL 2024. Hence, it is likely that they will try to keep their overseas combination intact.

Aiden Markram might not make the cut after two successive below-par seasons with the bat for SRH. He scored 468 runs at a meagre average of 23.4 and a strike rate of 125.1 in the last two seasons.

RTM card for Marco Jansen?

SRH might keep hold of yet another foreign player using their RTM option for South Africa’s Marco Jansen. Although he was shy of game time in the 2024 season, SRH would look to bring him back to the core setup, should they release Markram. With his ability to trouble the batters with extra bounce and carry with the new ball, and also with his big-hitting prowess as a batter, he would be among the favourites to make the retention list.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar to part ways after 10 years?

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been one of the long-time servants and an integral member of SRH. He is the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the IPL with 181 wickets in 176 matches. However, he struggled to find his feet in the previous season, registering a bowling average of 48.45 and a strike rate of 31.09. And, it seems, the time has come for SRH to part ways with their veteran pacer after 10 years.
