Suryansh Shedge is making his IPL debut today (March 25), turning out for Punjab Kings against Gujarat Titans at Ahmedabad.
The 22-year-old seam-bowling all-rounder from Mumbai was bought for his base price of INR 30 lakh at the 2024 IPL auction. He was previously associated with the IPL in 2023, after being named a late replacement for Jaydev Unadkat in the Lucknow Super Giants. However, he did not play a game.
Who is Suryansh Shedge?
Shedge made his senior debut last year during the Ranji Trophy clash against Bengal and went on to represent Mumbai across all formats. He has played seven first-class matches, making 404 runs at 50.50 with four fifties. He is yet to leave a mark with the bat in List A cricket, making only 85 runs in five innings, but has picked up nine wickets.
In T20s, he has had the maximum impact: He has made 131 runs at 43.66 at a strike rate of 251.92, also grabbing eight wickets at an average of 23. Shedge has faced 52 balls in T20 cricket, hitting 20 of them for boundaries – of which 13 have been maximums.
He burst onto the scene in the 2024/25 SMAT, where he batted below No.6 in seven of the nine innings that he played. He played important knocks in each of the three knockouts: In the quarter-final, with Mumbai chasing 223, Shedge made an unbeaten 36 in 12 to take his team home. He struck a first-ball six in the semis and then played another important hand in the final against Madhya Pradesh.
Mumbai needed 175 for a win, but were in trouble at 129-5 in the 15th over before Shedge struck 36* in 15 with three sixes to win the clash. He also grabbed a wicket in the final to win the Player of the Match award.
Shedge, who captained the Mumbai under-19 team but missed out on a spot in the World Cup, has worked alongside Abhishek Nayar, the current India assistant coach, perfecting his shots during match simulations at the nets. He told India Today: “I used to play 15 balls in the nets, practice match simulations, and get out of the nets. I got this clarity from Shreyas Iyer that this would be my role in the game, and I should continue with this set-up. What he asked me to add was to play a set of 6 balls, take a break, and then come back. The logic behind this was to keep my body cool, which would simulate match conditions better – where I would enter the ground after sitting in the dugout with a cold body.”
Shedge regards Ajinkya Rahane for his ability to remain calm under pressure and considers Ben Stokes and Virat Kohli his role models. He has already left a mark on Punjab Kings coach Ricky Ponting, who says his training sessions have “impressed” him.
