Jasprit Bumrah injury update

Mumbai Indians have provided an update on Jasprit Bumrah's injury status during their pre-season press conference ahead of the start of IPL 2025.

Mumbai Indians will play their first match of the season against Chennai Super Kings on March 23 but are set to miss the services of their premier fast bowler.

Jasprit Bumrah injury update

Bumrah is recovering from a back injury he sustained while playing the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy. He was initially named in India's provisional squad for the 2025 Champions Trophy but had to be withdrawn as he wasn't fit enough to participate.

Last week, reports of him being unavailable for the first few matches of IPL 2025 came through. Today (March 19), Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene confirmed that Bumrah was still in the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

"He is still at the NCA and is being monitored on a day to day basis. He is recovering and is in good spirits, hopefully he can join the team sooner," Jayawardene said at Mumbai Indians' pre-season press conference.

While there was no official timeline given on his recovery, an earlier report from ESPNcricinfo mentioned that Bumrah is likely to join the MI squad by early April.

Mumbai Indians name Hardik Pandya's captaincy replacement

MI have also confirmed that Suryakumar Yadav will be leading the team in their IPL 2025 opener against CSK on March 23. Pandya, their designated captain, won't be available for the fixture as he'd be serving his one-match suspension for breaching over-rate regulations in IPL 2024.

"I am lucky that I have three captains playing with me - Rohit, Surya and Bumrah. They always place an arm around my shoulder and are there when I need any help," Pandya said at the MI pre-season press conference.
