South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch signed an IPL 2025 contract with Mumbai Indians shortly after being picked for the PSL. Here are five more players who could end up following suit.
Bosch was picked by Peshawar Zalmi in the Diamond category for the upcoming season of the Pakistan Super League, which begins on April 11. However, on March 8, he was announced as Mumbai Indians' replacement for compatriot Lizaad Williams, who had been ruled out of the tournament.
Yesterday (March 16), Bosch was served a legal notice by the Pakistan Cricket Board, who alleged a "breach of his contractual obligations to the board." The intent behind the legal notice may primarily be to warn players, and try to ensure similar situations do not crop up this year, but recent standoffs between the PCB and BCCI have only gone one way.
If Bosch does indeed go on to play for Mumbai this season, it could open up the possibility of other players leaving the PSL to be signed as replacements in the IPL. Who are the prime candidates?
Note: At present, six of the ten IPL teams have at least one extra overseas slot in their squad, meaning the limit of eight overseas players in a squad is unlikely to be an issue.
Alzarri Joseph
PSL team: Peshawar Zalmi
IPL 2025 auction base price: INR 2 crore
Joseph was picked by Peshawar in the Supplementary round, the final one of the draft. He has represented three IPL teams: Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru – the latter just last season. His IPL record is not the greatest, but he remains a bowler who can be devastating on his day (he still holds the record for the best innings figures in IPL history).
Injuries to fast bowlers are not uncommon, meaning IPL slots could potentially open up for him. The only stumbling block might be his IPL base price of INR 2 crore, meaning he can only come in for a player who is currently being paid more than that.
Michael Bracewell
PSL team: Multan Sultans
IPL 2025 auction base price: INR 1.5 crore
At the time of the auction in November, Bracewell going unsold didn't raise many eyebrows. However, his stock has risen considerably following his excellent Champions Trophy performances, and a season-ending injury could tempt an IPL side into luring Bracewell away from the PSL.
SRH are a potential option, where his overall package of off spin and hitting down the order could help him slot quite easily into the XI.
Kyle Jamieson
PSL team: Quetta Gladiators
IPL 2025 auction base price: INR 1.5 crore
Bracewell's fellow Kiwi, Kyle Jamieson, is another player with a chance of being approached by an IPL side. Since the auction, Jamieson has taken 14 wickets in 12 Super Smash games for Canterbury, and made a comeback to ODI cricket in the Champions Trophy. He has had injury issues, but his bounce remains an awkward proposition for opposition batters to deal with.
His former side RCB would be an unlikely destination this time around given the strength of their overseas quicks, but he could end up being a shrewd acquisiton for Rajasthan Royals in case Jofra Archer does not last the season.
Ben Dwarshuis
PSL team: Islamabad United
IPL 2025 auction base price: INR 75 lakh
Like Jamieson, Dwarshuis is also a decent quick-bowling option with the ability to hit a long ball at No.9 (or No.8 in a pinch). He is an upgrade in one regard, with his left-handedness. He's yet to play in the IPL, but could be another tempting form pick – based on his recent performances for Australia.
Ricky Ponting's affinity for Australians is no secret, and he has assembled six of them – Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Josh Inglis, Aaron Hardie and Xavier Bartlett – in his role as head coach at Punjab Kings. Kiwi quick Lockie Ferguson's fitness status remains unconfirmed after he missed the Champions Trophy, meaning there may already be a slot opening up for Dwarshuis to come in there.
Matthew Short
PSL team: Islamabad United
IPL 2025 auction base price: INR 75 lakh
Another Australian, but this time an opening batter. Short scored a BBL century in January, and a quickfire 63 in the Champions Trophy against England – and can get through a couple of overs of handy off spin. He had a spell with Punjab Kings in 2023, but openings there might be hard to come by there this time around.
Delhi Capitals are yet to announce a replacement for England batter Harry Brook, so there is one potential spot there for now.
