Last month, the governing council of the IPL held a meeting to discuss changes for the upcoming season. These included that franchises will be able to retain up to six players for the 2025 edition, the continuation of the right-to-match option in the auction, and the continuation of the Impact Player rule until at least 2027.
An auction is held for the tournament every year but a mega auction is held every three or four years. Franchises can retain fewer players ahead of mega-auctions, leading to more turnover in squads and more players moving to different teams.
There has been no date announced for this year's auction yet, but sides must decide which players they wish to retain by October 31. The auction will likely happen at some point in November, following player-retention announcements.
Which country will host the IPL 2025 auction?
There has been no announcement as of yet on where the auction will be hosted, however, it is reportedly likely to be held outside of India. Last year, the auction was held on non-Indian soil for the first time, with the edition for the 2024 tournament held in Dubai.
According to Cricbuzz, sources within the IPL have revealed that the auction will likely be held somewhere in the Middle East, with Doha and Abu Dhabi options to host. Saudi Arabia is also reportedly a possibility as a host, with the IPL looking to cement its expansion into the region with franchise tournaments.
There have been plans in previous years of the IPL to host the auction in London or even Istanbul, but neither of these came to fruition.
