Maxwell, Head involved in heated clash

Tarvis Head and Glenn Maxwell were involved in a heated exchange during Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL 2025 match against Punjab Kings on Saturday (April 12).

The incident happened in the ninth over of SRH’s 246-run chase when Maxwell, who had already conceded 26 runs off his first two overs, returned to bowl. After Maxwell's first two balls yielded a single each, Head came back on strike. The southpaw immediately seized on a short ball, making room to free his arms and pulling it over wide long-on, then repeated the feat off the fourth ball as well by staying deep in his crease and launching an 84-meter six over mid-wicket, further denting Maxwell’s figures.

What happened between Maxwell and Head?

The fifth ball was a quicker length delivery, and as Head tried to make room, he could only hit it straight back to Maxwell, who immediately took a sharp shy at the stumps. This sparked a fiery exchange between the two, with Head visibly unimpressed by his compatriot’s antics. However, Maxwell seemingly diffused the tension by walking back to his mark, muttering under his breath, a faint smile hinting at his reluctance to escalate things further.

Their Australia teammate Marcus Stoinis, too, had a sharp exchange with Head, possibly to ease out things, with the umpires watching.

By the time Head fell to Yuzvendra Chahal in the 13th over, SRH had raced to 171. Head ended with a 37-ball 66 studded with nine fours and three sixes. Attempting to muscle a tossed-up delivery outside off across the line, he only managed to sky it towards long-on – where, fittingly, Maxwell waited to complete the catch, ending their fiery duel with a quiet revenge.

While Head’s innings progressed at a brisk pace, it paled in comparison to Abhishek Sharma’s fireworks, who smashed the fifth-fastest century in IPL history – a blistering 40-ball 100 studded with 11 fours and 6 sixes. His assault single-handedly propelled SRH toward a dominant victory.

When asked about the incident after the game, Head laughed it off: "They [Maxwell and Stoinis] probably bring the best and worst out of you when you play with them. Just a bit of friendly banter. I have to put up with them at home, so nothing too untoward!"
