Indian speedster Mayank Yadav returned to competitive action after six months, in LSG's IPL 2025 match against MI on Sunday (April 27). Here is how fast he bowled in the first innings.
Mayank burst onto the scene in last year's IPL, with his blistering pace making everyone take notice – he consistently clocked in excess of 150 kph, going as high as 156 kph. His campaign was cut short with injury, but he recovered in time to make his T20I debut for India, playing three matches against Bangladesh.
The last of those on October 12 was his last competitive outing, as a lumbar stress injury kept him out of commission. He was retained by Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2025, and finally came into the XI against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede stadium on April 27.
Over 1: 6 runs (fastest: 142.7kph, slowest: 134.5kph, average: 139.3kph)
Mayank was given the ball for the very first over of the match, and did seem to be testing himself out. Perhaps as expected, he did not come close to 150 at all, starting at 140.9kph, but not going higher than 142.7kph – this was, in fact, his quickest delivery of the day. He remained in the high 130s and low 140s for the over.
Over 2: 13 runs, 1 wicket (fastest: 141.6kph, slowest: 112.2kph, average: 135.2kph)
In his second over, Mayank sent down a wide before Rohit Sharma hit him for consecutive sixes. Those three deliveries, and the following dot ball, were 140, 141, 141 and 141kph respectively. He struck with the penultimate ball of the over, taking significant pace off the ball and getting Rohit to hit it only as far as short third. That delivery was just 112.2kph.
Over 3: 16 runs (fastest: 138.7kph, slowest: 107.8kph, average: 120.0kph)
Returning in the 10th over of the innings, Mayank went to several change-ups in his third over, which was the most expensive. Four of these deliveries were under 120kph, and the other two were 135kph and 138kph. By this point, it was clear that the plan was to take pace off, but even with on-pace deliveries, Mayank was not quite back to the heights he had hit pre-injury.
Over 4: 5 runs, 1 wicket (fastest: 141.4kph, slowest: 109.4kph, average: 128.6kph)
He finished his spell well, with a tight over. The first ball saw him knock back Hardik Pandya's stumps with a delivery measuring 134kph. The first ball to new batter Naman Dhir measured 141kph, but all the others were below 135, including a couple of cutters at 111kph and 109kph.
It will be interesting to see how long it takes (or indeed whether at all) Mayank gets back to the pace he displayed last year. But for now, his line and length remain controlled enough, and his ability to drop the pace at will is also an asset.
