Symbols of green trees have shown up instead of regular dots on the scorecard graphics whenever a dot ball has been bowled in the ongoing IPL 2025.
The fans noticed the change for the first time during the playoffs of the 2023 IPL, leading to curiosity all around. The concept was carried forward to the WPL as well as the 2024 IPL. For the first time now in 2025, it has been introduced in the league phase of the IPL.
The initiative is part of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) sustainability drive, launched in collaboration with TATA, the IPL’s title sponsor. Under the program, every dot ball bowled during the tournament will result in 500 trees being planted. A tree graphic appears on the screen whenever a dot ball is delivered.
Jay Shah, the former BCCI secretary shared on a social media post after the IPL 2024 Qualifier 1 between Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad, revealing that a total of 42,000 saplings were planted for the 84 dot balls during the game.
In December last year, the BCCI revealed that the four hundred thousandth tree, part of the Green initiative, was planted at the new premises of the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, now called the BCCI Centre of Excellence.
