Watch: Umran Malik sent Devdutt Padikkal’s off-stump cartwheeling with a typically searing delivery, clocked at 149.2kph, to snare his first wicket of IPL 2023 today (April 2).

It was in Sunrisers Hyderabad colours that Umran first gained the limelight two seasons ago as a tearaway quick, possibly India’s fastest ever. Last year, he broke into the T20I and ODI teams, and early this year, broke the record for the fastest delivery bowled by an India quick in an international game [155kph]. He also holds the record for the fastest delivery by an India quick in the IPL [157 kph].

Brought in sixth change against Rajasthan Royals on a track that seemed to assist batting, Umran found his first breakthrough in his third over, when he beat Devdutt Padikkal for pace. The batter, hanging on his back foot and hopping as the rapid ball came into him, could do little as the delivery flew past his bat and crashed into his off stump. A customary jump and pump-in-the-air nearly followed, but Umran pulled out of his celebration midway, only giving the batter a sheepish smile.

Earlier, twin half-centuries from Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal took RR past 100 in the eight over itself. However, a flurry of wickets in the second half pulled SRH back into the game.
