Shubman Gill’s superb 2023 got even better in Gujarat Titans’ game against Lucknow Super Giants today (May 7) at Ahmedabad, with the young India opener scoring an unbeaten 51-ball 94 as his side finished on 227-2 from their 20 overs.

Gujarat raced off to a flier with Gill’s opening partner Wriddhiman Saha responsible for the bulk of the early damage. Saha’s start was remarkable – he brought up his fifty within the opening opening powerplay as Gujarat finished the first six overs on 78-0. At that point Gill was playing second fiddle but was still scoring at an impressive rate; after six overs he was on 22 off 13 deliveries.

Saha eventually fell in the 13th over for 81 off 43 balls but Gill continued to take the attack to the Lucknow bowlers. Gill finished the innings six runs short of what would have been his first IPL hundred with two fours and seven sixes to his name.

As ever with Gill, his knock contained a number of sublime shots. Two of his best came in the same over off leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi. Gill hit the first ball of Bishnoi’s second over – a length delivery outside off stump – over extra cover for six and then three balls later smashed a similar delivery straight over Bishnoi’s head for another maximum.

Gujarat’s total of 227 was fourth highest score of the competition so far while Gill’s innings took him second in the overall run-scoring charts 42 runs behind Orange Cap holder Faf du Plessis.
