Nalkande, the 24-year-old quick playing his first match of IPL 2023, seemingly had his first wicket of the season when Gaikwad lobbed a ball at short mid-wicket, off the third delivery of the second over. Nalkande celebrated, but the happiness was short-lived as the buzzer roared at the Chepauk Stadium and replays confirmed a front-foot no-ball. “What have you done, young man?” said one of the commentators.
To make matters worse, Gaikwad capitalised on the free hit, clubbing a six off the bonus delivery past the long-on fence.
After his first two overs, Nalkande’s figures read: 2-0-22-0. Gaikwad, who was on 2 when he got the reprieve, went on to get 60 off 44.
