Watch: Mark Wood took two-in-two with searing pace in today’s (April 1) IPL fixture between Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants. He bowled Prithvi Shaw and Mitchell Marsh with twin 91 mph rockets which demolished both their off-stumps.
Wood was bowling his first over in this year’s competition and his first for Lucknow Super Giants after he was ruled out of last year’s IPL. He had conceded just one from a wide off his second ball before he struck twice in consecutive deliveries.
Facing up to the Delhi Capitals’ captain on 12 off nine, Wood bowled a scorching delivery which was clocked at 147 kph (91 mph). It went straight through Shaw’s bat and pad and crashed into his off-stump, sending the zing bails flying. Wood ran away and jumped into the air in celebration.
Marsh came to the crease next, the Australia all-rounder in his second season for Delhi Capitals. Wood bowled him a near-identical delivery, with Marsh again playing a big booming drive first up. The ball once more sailed in between the significant gap between Marsh’s bat and pad, castling off-stump for the second time.
On a hat trick, Wood was faced next with Sarfaraz Ahmed. He bowled a slightly surprising delivery, given that both the previous two wickets were taken with full balls. He dragged back his length and the ball flew over Sarfaraz’s head as he ducked out of the way.
David Warner at the other end opted to review the delivery for a wide. In some confusion, the third umpire ruled the delivery a no-ball (for being the second bouncer) as Sarfaraz ducked underneath, without checking Sarfaraz’s upright stance.
Sarfaraz had to go in Wood’s next over, however. He misjudged a short ball, clipping it straight to fine leg and giving Wood figures of 3-3 from two overs.
