Chennai set a very high target of 224. Delhi needed a fast start and a strong opening partnership. However, Shaw fell off just the ninth delivery of the innings, having only scored five runs from the seven balls he faced.
Tushar Deshpande bowled a full delivery just outside off stump that held in the surface slightly. Shaw attempted to drive on the up but the ball continued to rise. Rayudu flew in the air at mid-off and took one of the best catches of the tournament to see Shaw off.
This follows a disappointing edition of the IPL from Shaw, having only made one notable score in the tournament – a half-century against Punjab Kings.
It has also been a disappointing competition for the Delhi overall: they finished ninth out of ten teams, and may slip to bottom place if Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Mumbai Indians.
In this game, only captain David Warner stood firm, with a 58-ball 86, but his efforts were not enough for Delhi to chase the target set by Chennai.
They eventually made 146-9, largely due to Deepak Chahar, who finished with the wickets of Phil Salt, Rilee Rossouw, and Axar Patel to finish with 3-22.
